I have very exciting news.... FK Photography is due for a facelift.... so my website and blog will be getting a makeover! I am actually going to be merging the two into one fabulous new "blogsite". In the meantime, though, that means my main website, http://www.fkphotography.ca/, will be down temporarily. Hopefully the downtime will not be all that long, and I can share the new-and-improved site with you ASAP.

In the meantime, I'll be updating this blog with updates and sneak peeks from current sessions.  I had a great session on the weekend, and after it was finished, I took a quick drive down to Middle Island, since I was feeling inspired to get some new outdoor shots. Here's a little peek:


I was inspired by a photographer friend of mine (thanks Stacy), to look at things from a different perspective.... and I love how it turned out! I think I may start offering some of these types of shots as prints for sale at some point too. When I first started getting serious about photography, the stuff I was shooting was very different than it is now. Now, of course, I tend to focus more on portraits and weddings. Back then, I did a lot of nature photography, particularly flowers.  Often times now, I find myself wishing I could get out and take some photos *just for me*. However, between work, photography sessions, and family time, there isn't often much time left to spare - and the idea gets tossed to the side, "for another day, when I'm not so busy". When does that day come? Not very often. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my clients. Every person that has allowed me to photograph them has made me feel so blessed, that they allowed me to document their lives with my lens. But, now and then, I still miss the days of just taking photos just for fun.



On Easter weekend, Emma and I were heading to her Nana and Papa's house for an Easter egg hunt and brunch, followed by some kite-flying. I brought my camera along that day, hoping to get a few shots of Emma, and some of her really awesome kites (which I did - and will definitely share soon). Once I had taken a few of those shots, I got walking the perimeter of their property, and found myself drawn to some interesting little things, things that I may not have otherwise noticed had I not been walking alone with my camera. So I took a few shots. And soon enough, I felt so content. I was experimenting, and having fun with my camera. I was shooting for myself. I can't begin to tell you how amazing it felt.


Here are some of my results from that day. Some of them, I'm sure you will look at and maybe even wonder what it is, or why I shot it from that angle? That's the idea - to look at things from a different perspective.

Well I realize it has been almost 3 weeks since my last blog post, but there is a very good reason... I just got back from Jamaica yesterday! It was a fantastic week, with beautiful weather, and wonderful company.

I enjoyed the opportunity of a lifetime - to photograph a destination wedding in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, at the Gran Bahia Principe resort. Once again, I want to thank Lisa and Darrell for trusting me with the important job of capturing their wedding day memories. While I can't share any of those photos for probably several more weeks, I was able to sift through my literally hundreds and hundreds of photos and find some snapshots which showcase some of the beautiful scenery I was able to enjoy.

These first four photos were taken on the resort property. This resort was huge, and had so much to offer. I will definitely never forget this place!





This final shot is of Dunn's River Falls, a very popular attraction in Jamaica. Most of our crew braved the climb to the top, but I chose to take the scenic (and much drier!) climb to capture some photos. This is only one small section, but it gives you an idea of how amazing the falls and lush surroundings really are.

I have talked before about my dream of being a photographer, and why I pursued this as a second career. I had been doing this "job" for just over a year when I came across FLY, an online workshop offered by Angie Warren. It is a fairly tight-knit group of women, with only 18 enrolled. Our goal? To "fly" away from our fear of failure and to feel confidence in our own work and our photography style. It has been an amazing workshop so far.  Of course we are all going to have days when we feel defeated, feel down, and feel like giving up, despite all our dreams and desires to move forward. It's so easy to feel alone at times like that, to feel like you should just forget about it and give up.

Well, one of the workshop ladies offered a link this morning to an amazing video that showcases others who have failed... and succeeded. It is truly inspirational. Take a peek:
Of course I realize this video is not exactly photography-related, but I just felt like sharing it. If it helps one person overcome their fear of failure, then this post will be worth it :)

I frequently get asked by prospective clients.... "what should we wear for our photo shoot?". There are many things I advise them, but basically it comes down to the following:

*wear complementary colours

*matching is NOT necessary - at ALL!

*layer and accessorize - adds depth and texture to your photos, plus it's fun! Think boots, hats, shoes, hair accessories, etc.

*colour colour colour!

*bring a 2nd outfit for a different look if you want

I also encourage people to check out Old Navy and Gap Canada online, for even more ideas. Those websites show lots of variety for the whole family, and as a bonus they have great sales :)  Plus they give you lots of ideas for different combinations and accessories too.

Of course, a visual always helps, right? I put this compilation together for a family of four (mom, dad, boy and girl). Obviously this doesn't fit everyone's family, but you get the idea.


Of course you're thinking - SPRING? Did you not look outside? Of course. But spring is not that far away, and now is the time to start thinking about a fresh, fun, colourful photo shoot. Get ready to beat the winter blahs!!  I am now taking bookings for spring and summer shoots, so call me today!

So it's been pretty snowy here lately, boy is that an understatement!! I had promised Emma that I would take her snowshoeing yesterday, and we didn't go too far but it was fun anyway. Usually we can access the walking trail directly across from our house, but there was just too big of a bank for us to get over. Next time we will definitely have to find a way, because it's so much fun :)

The trees in the woods on our way to the trail just look so amazing with all this snow too I find. Couldn't resist taking a few photos on our little jaunt...




And then out of nowhere was this brown leaf from the fall. Just laying in the snow.










And my lightpost at the end of the walkway? Oh yeah there it is...


Well I do love the winter, but I think I am not alone when I say "where's spring??" - hopefully sometime soon, but with all this snow to melt it's hard to say!!

I realize it has been over a week since my last blog post, so sorry! I have something a little different for you today. Winter is traditionally a quieter time in the photography world, at least in more wintery climates like where I live! I have some sessions upcoming in February, but to keep the creativity fires burning, I decided to do a little experimenting.... some outdoor and some indoor shots, using different angles and different settings than I am typically used to shooting with. I am so pleased with the results, and I hope you are too!













Of course, winter photo shoots can be a blast, provided it's not -30 degrees.... with some milder weather on the horizon, it's a great chance to get out and enjoy our beautiful snowy landscape. Want some wintery family photos? Give me a call!
